Saturday, May 24, 2008 - S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y- - - EXCELLENT!!! PARTY ON GARTH!!!!!

Posted in University

University is HARD!!!  I told my kids the other day that if I had done this when I was 18 I would have totally failed.  After hours of reading and research, it took me five hours to logically put together an outline for an essay.  I thought the hardest part was done.  Nope - it took me nine continuous hours to WRITE the blasted thing yesterday.  It isn't due until Tuesday, but I submitted it electronically then and there, so I wouldn't be tempted to do anymore tweaking.  And then what did I do?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllll......I packed up my research materials, returned them to the library, and spent an hour looking for research materials to bring home and get to work on my NEXT research essay.  I have two more assigned. I haven't cooked a meal all week, and I haven't even opened the mail!  The house is (remarkably) in fairly decent condition, and the laundry is okay.  Thankfully the boys are pretty self-sufficient.

The good news is, I'm sleeping much better!  Now I was up at 4:45 this morning, but when I consider I passed out sometime between 8 and 9 with a book about Japanese-Canadians during WWII under my head, amid a leaf pile of post-it notes.....I think that's a pretty good night's sleep!

It's too bad I haven't thought of a way to make better use of my commuting time.  The drive to the university is about 40 minutes, give or take.  BUT!  It's construction season, so it doesn't matter which route I take, there is going to be a snag in the traffic.  I was stuck in a jam on Wellington Rd Tuesday afternoon for sooooooooooo long, I just pulled into a plaza that was to my right, went into a spa and asked if they could take a "walk-in" (they could!) and got a manicure.  By the time I left, I was feeling a lot less harried and the traffic had cleared up.

Today, I'm cleaning and catching up on household stuff, and then get my school junk organized.  But then at some point, I intend to hang out on my deck and read a magazine and have a glass of wine.  Tomorrow? I sew.  I'm laughing here......cuz you hear all about the wild collegiate life.....a glass of wine and a few loads of laundry is as close as I can get to PARTYING here!!!!  How do the kids do it????  ...mind boggling!

Very proud of you-it is hard and wine and laundry really does sound like a party. I was a philosophy major in the seventies-if you really wanted to you could use and ipod on your commute-you can listen to podcasts, music, books on tape. Hugs

Saturday, May 24, 2008 - What to do during the commute
Posted by Anonymous
Hi Nancy - the answer is podcasts! I listen to them on my 45 minute drive to and from work, and sometimes, honestly, I'm disappointed to finish the commute! There are some good quilting ones - Annie Smith and Alex Anderson, for instance. And, there are probably lots on topics related to your classes.

I also have a 40-45 minute commute to work and usually longer on the way home everyday. I listen to books on tape. Well, CD really since that is all that I have in my car. I get them from the library. Great way to listen to current novels and drive and it helps with my road rage. They also have classics and self-help and really any type of books on CD or tape that you could possibly want to hear. Give it a try!
