Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - My First Day in University

First day of University, and I could have kicked myself for not having my bag packed and all the details ironed out.  My thought was I would leave a few things to the very end to keep myself busy, so I didn't go crazy waiting to leave.  This was a mistake.  I was harried, and felt disorganized.

I pulled into campus, and stopped at the info booth to ask about where the closest place I could park.  The nice girl put down her cards (I had disturbed her game of solitaire).  She directed me to a lot directly across the road from Talbot College.  Terrific!  It's raining, and I can just scoot across and enjoy my morning coffee.

Um....it was a staff parking lot.  My transponder wouldn't let me in.  The dang kid in the booth (who should have been reading a BOOK for crying out loud!!!) thought I was a professor!!!! The closest lot was a healthy 10 minute walk from the building, in the rain.  Oh well, I had allowed myself plenty of time.

Anyway.....this is what I learned in my first day of Philosophy 1130

I know more about

Then I will EVER know about

Now, I'll be honest here.  I'm reasonably intelligent.  Mensa isn't banging on my front door, but I can walk and chew gum at the same time.  But I didn't have a freaking clooooooooooooooooooo what these people were talking about.  Only one very small glimmer of recollection here:

Professor: Why can we assume that eugenics are a "big idea"?

Me: Uh....ca we assume that some of us don't know what eugenics means?

Professor: OH! DEFINITIONS! (goes to the black board) "eu" from the Greek meaning "good" or "well" and "genes" meaning, uh...oh something health related.

Me: (to me) there's hope for you here old girl....genes is Greek for "born" all the Latin and Greek from nursing school is going to help

But I reckon I'm NOT supposed to know, I'm there to LEARN, right?  (Or as Socrates would say, "recollect" because I already knew everything before I was born, but simply forgot - - see Mom?  I did my homework!)

And homework?  HOLY MACKINAW!!!!  I worked a seven hours solid on homework, and still didn't get it done. I have an article to read and summarize.  The hold up was going over EVERYTHING we discussed yesterday, slowly, with a dictionary in hand, so I could digest it, and possibly retain it.

Today I'm in Writing, and I'll be home earlier, so I should be able to get caught up.

I didn't sleep worth a darn.  I passed out early, before "House" ended, but woke around 3ish, and laid there until 5.  I got up, unloaded the dishwasher, scrubbed the kitchen sink, tossed in a load of laundry, made coffee and oatmeal. Dinner is planned. My bag is packed, my clothes are laid out.  I'm just waiting to hear that the boys are out of the shower so I can switch loads and then go get myself ready to leave for school.  I'm feeling much better today.

I went "no-mail" on all of my groups, so if anyone needs to get a message to me, you'd better send it to my personal email.

I hope you were doing all that reading with a pink hi-llighter! It's so much easier to review when you have the main points hi-lited. I didn't get philosophy either. Neither did my kids, now that I think of it. I'm a language person, German and English. Philosophy? not so much. Rhoda

I am still sitting here scratching my head and trying to figure out just why you would want to do this to yourself. You must really love to learn... don't get me wrong...I think you ( I ) need to learn some thing new every day, but I prefer to learn at a more relaxed pace...life gets frantic enough, when one has a home and family to care for, that I leave my learning to "fun stuff" (like quilting). You are a real marvel! All the things you pack into a day are amazing! However, you seem to have such a love for fun things (like quilting) that I am wondering how you will ever be able to fit those things into your already full day. Won't you miss it? ...won't you miss us? ...your faithful readers and quilting buddies...'cause we will certainly be missing you!
What a curiosity you have become...I have gleaned tidbits ( I think) from your comments, such as the fact that you were a nurse, (not sure if you mentioned why, that is a past profession), you have 2 teenage boys and a husband, you love to quilt, scrapbook, read, shop for bargains...you are a member of a couple of local guilds, an insomniac...I almost know more about you than my youngest sister. So forgive me for being so forward...I have no doubt you are more than capable of the workload, but what the heck are you doing this to yourself for? What ever the reasons...I am in your corner...rooting for you...but I have a request...don't get so busy that you forget to keep us updated...I for one will miss all your daily chatter.

Wow Nancy! You are a brave soul. I would be petrified to walk on a campus today. It has been to many years since I was a student. I think it is great that you are brave enough to do it though. Good Luck today! Sounds as though you are ready for them today!!

Hmmm... pretty deep there Nancy. I didn't know I knew everything before I was born! Good genes are a big idea? I dunno. I do know that good genes are a good idea. Good luck. Keep sharing what you're learning. I love this stuff (as long as I'm not the one being graded on it *LOL*).

The first few days are the worst. I've gone back to college twice as an adult. I felt like a mother to all the other students in my classes. I was so hoping to feel young and free again. Ha! Have fun!
