Saturday, May 3, 2008 - Saturday's Yard Sale Report

It almost looked like the skies would clear today - alas, raindrops kept fallin' on my head!  We headed out bright and early towards Ilderton for their town-wide yard sales.

A little disappointing actually....I didn't find too many treasures.  I did score a HUGE box of household linens which will completely outfit Baby Soldier when he leaves for college.  I chose about a dozen nice towels, a few pillowcases, and some tea towels for him, and FreeCycled the rest.  The towels tooked brand new and had "Sears" tags on them, and I paid $4 for the whole box so that was a good bargain.

For myself I got two books - both are Canadian authors, and neither appears to have been even opened - $1 for the two of them.  A spool of 1000m of Gutermann thread for a quarter, and a vintage letter opener (an advertising giveaway from Clark's Flour and Feed in Watford - I wonder what their phone number is now??  I don't think dialing '39' is gonna cut it) for a quarter.  I thought it would be a handy little tool for poking out corners.

I'm working on Clue 5 of the Quilts of Valor mystery, and the Block of the month for Simple Scrappy Treasures.  Not much else going on around here.  Tomorrow's looking like a brighter day!

You had a good day treasure hunting. Isn't that letter opener cool? You're right about the new use for it, I agree with you. A good find on the books, I love to read. My Mother taught me how to read before I started school, she is 93 now and just as quick and alert as ever. Sometimes I think she can beat me! Anyway, good hunting and have a good weekend, Molly

My grandmother was always an avid garage saler and frequently found little treasures, but our favorite story had to do with a box of linens. One afternoon upon returning from her Saturday shopping spree, Grandma sat in the kitchen sorting her treasures and came to the HUGE box of linens that she had bought for about $5 (it was the early 60s). Most of them were badly stained but she thought a bit of bleach would clean them up so she kept digging through. At the bottom she found a wedding dress! It had a huge stain down the front, but my 10 year old aunt saw it and fell in love, she told grandma that someday that would be HER wedding dress. Grandma just nodded and put it back in the bottom of the box, she didn't think the stain would come out but she wasn't going to tell my aunt that. She put the box in the attic. Ten years later my aunt was engaged and wanted to know where her dress was. Grandma went to the attic and dug it out and took it to the cleaners. She asked them to try to get the stain out, but not to bother pressing it. However when she returned it was not only stain free but pressed and laid out on 2 six foot boards, it took my grandfather and both of my uncles to carry it into the house. My aunt wore the dress and looked beautiful. My sister and I were the flower girls, after the wedding my sister (all of about 5 years old) told my grandmother that she wanted to wear that dress when she got married. 15 years later she did just that.
Yep, our family heirloom wedding dress is a $5 garage sale find. :)

Jennifer, what a great story! Nice purchases at the yard sales Nancy. I got a couple baskets...one for the yo yo's I've been making and the other because I couldn't resist, some novels and a cool cupboard with curved glass for my sewing machine miniatures. That's all I had time for this morning :-).
