Saturday, October 20, 2007 - Photo Tutorial - FASTEST charity quilt top ever

Well, first of all - I did the deed.  I picked up my new sewing machine.  I know how to fill a bobbin, and thread the thing; how to use the auto threader, set the auto down-needle, change the foot - - yep, I'm feeling pretty confident!  To test drive my new toy, I made a charity quilt top in 1 hour and 40 minutes.

STEP 1:

Cut nine  6" strips WOF from three prints.  2 strips of a large focus print, 3 strips from Colour A, and 4 strips from Colour B

STEP 2:

Sew strips together: 1st set: focus fabric, Colour B, and Colour A

                               2nd set: Colour B, Colour A, Colour B

3rd set: Colour A, Colour B, focus fabric

Press seams, and cut strips into six 6" segments

STEP 3:

Sew segments together to make 6 nine-patch blocks, making certain that focus fabrics are on the outer opposing corners.  Press.

STEP 4

Cut each block into quarters.  Lay ruler along horizontal seam, setting the 2.75" line on the seam.  Cut.  Then lay the ruler along the vertical seam, laying the 2.75" line on the seam.  Cut.  Stack pieces up.

STEP 5

Swap the bottom left stack with the top right stack.

STEP 6

Sew blocks back together. Press.

STEP 7

Lay block out in three rows of two blocks, and sew together.  Press.

STEP 8:

Add borders as desired. And press.

The fabric I used is remnants, so I only had enough green left to make a very narrow border, and then enough yellow to make a 2nd border.  I put some dark green ric-rac between the quilt and the first border for a little interest.  The finished top measures 40" x 60".

I hope this tutorial is of some use.  Two colours can be used as well.  I imagine a scrappy look might be nice too!

Oh, I love the quilt top! If I wasn't tired, it might sink in, but I'll have to study it.
Jen and I are having a blast quilting quilts. However, she came so I could teach
her, and I'm the one who is confused! But we're getting it done!

Isn't this a version of the Disappearing Nine Patch? I've been wanting to try that - thanks for posting all those pictures of it - that really helps understand the process.

And your quilt-holder looks thrilled to be helping out!

Your previous story about the sewing machine purchase was a great story, and very helpful to others too I'm sure. SHOP AROUND!!

What fun! Thanks for the tutorial. It will come in handy at a preschool next weekend where I'm giving a quick lesson to moms wanting to make nap quilts for the Ks and pre-Ks.

I used this to make a top and it turned out great. Very easy to follow but have to admit it took me longer than it took you! LOL

I posted a picture on my blog (www.randomstitches-norma.blogspot.com/) but for the life of me I could not get a link back to you to work. My computer skills are lacking some days.

Thanks for doing this, I plan to use it again for some quick Christmas gifts for the grandkids.
