My little years and sewing!
|
My mom taught me how to sew when I was just 8 or 9 year old. I made all of my doll clothes an apros & even made my first skirt by hand for 4-H one year and my mom made me wear shorts under it to school so that day as I wanted to show it off! Bless her heart she knew what she was doing and didn't scar me for life by not letting me have my way! I wore the skirt to school and while playing on the play ground a seam came out of the skirt...I was pretty much a tom boy when it came to playing outside even thought I loved my dolls and such! My mom having me wear shorts under my skirt saved the day!
As far as my quilting skills...I remember my mom and aunts being in quilting bees and always making quilts when I was growing up! I remember my g'ma let me help her tie a quilt when I stayed with her during the summer!
My first quilt I made I was 18 year old in the summer of 1974 and was clueless as to requirements for making a quilt! TeXas Elaine has since identified the quilt for me as "Trip Around the World" and my squares were 5" finished. I didn't have a pattern I just made it one summer so when I married in the winter time my new hubby and I would have a quilt to keep us warm at night! Good thing I made it too it was the only quilt we had that cold winter! I still have the quilt after all this many years!
I have made several baby quilts through the years I remember making one each for my children as babies. I made a "Cat" quilt with Christmas money in the 1980s for my bed. My father-in-law had decided to give us money for Christmas and I made a quilt with my money so that I would have my gift as a keepsake! I had bought me some of the red and blue craft paint in tubes that you can draw on fabric with, I had seen my aunt make many faux embroidery items this way! I designed and drawed my cats to fit on a 81/2" x 11" sheet of paper for patterns...they looked like Redwork! with just the outline of each cat...I still have my patterns around here somewhere but my quilt top is long gone. I purchased my fabric and paint from Woolworths, and backed it with the pre-quilted fabric lining. My whaite top fabric wore completely ragged and I still have the backing though. Maybe I will remake that cat quilt someday!
I have made a Christmas quilt around 1999-2000, I have about worn that quilt out as I use it all the time! It has been washed 100s of times! Don't look that great but it's nice and thin for daily use for me and my arthritis! I have been known to be colder than my hubby who loves the cooling system!
My Quilts Through the Years! (The ones that I can remember over 30 years)

First SNOW of the season!
|
We got our first SNOW here late yesterday. Mighty, mighty early in the season for us...even to have SNOW!
We usually don't even have cold weather till after Thanksgiving but it is here. My daughter and I got up early to go do some more Christmas shopping and groceries too!...we do have to eat!
I took off over to her house since, where we were going shopping is closer to where she lives. It rained on us all day mostly just a damp drizzle! Got our shopping done late in the evening and while I stood waiting on her to get hers checked out the lady who also worked there was telling me about a man that had came in from an area which is a higher elevation than where we were and that he had gotten snow today, to my disbelief I retold the story to my daughter and she like me just frowned upon that idea! It was just to wet & rainy to be snowing! Period! Plenty cold enough though, mind you!
Well by now it is dark and still raining and colddddd! Our feet are killing us from all the walking and shopping so we toss our groceries and other goodies into her van and off we go, making another stop or two on the way to pick up something “ready to eat” for our supper. Our drive back home which was a good little distance was wet and foggy drive! No SNOW anywhere! We come pulling up into her driveway and she goes, “look mom, your car is covered in snow!” I am like “no way” we look twice it is SNOW! you know, that pretty white fluffy cold stuff! We loaded my goodies and groceries into my trunk and off home I came slopping thru the rain! The SNOW except what is on my car is all gone! It snowed while we were out! Booohooo! But it SNOWED none-the-less! We had a fun day and what a neat way to end the day with a bit of SNOW!
